Bollywood takes further step in being inclusive of LGBTQIA Community; Akshay Kumar as trans person in Laxmi Bomb

Laxmmi Bomb, a much-awaited comedy-horror movie of Akshay Kumar with Raghava Lawrence is all set to release on OTT platform Disney+Hotstar on 24th July. Laxmmi Bomb is the first collaboration between Raghava and Akshay. The story is written and directed by Raghava.  Laxmmi bomb is the Hindi version of Telugu movie Kanchana 2.

Taking about the inside of the film, Akshay Kumar has been seen sharing about the role intensity during the online event of Disney+Hotstar announcement.

Akshay shared, “This was the most mentally-intensive role I have ever played in my life, and the credit of getting that right goes to my director Lawrence. He introduced me to a version of myself I didn’t know existed. I am playing the role of a trans person, and I was aware that I must do this with full honestly because I don’t want to offend any community”.

Story and Characters of Laxmmi Bomb

Laxmmi Bomb’s story mainly revolves around the lead Raaghav, played by Akshay Kumar, who has fears and feels something paranormal is around him. Akshay shares the intensity and difficulty of his role in Laxmmi Bomb.

Akshay added to the shoot diaries, Usually, I am not someone who goes in for many re-takes, but for this one, I was happy to give as many re-takes because I wanted to get it right and have the maximum acting potential show through. Akshay opened up about his costume saree, which he was supposed to wear, and it was quite a big challenge for him, he said. He added that it was graceful to be in saree for Laxmmi Bomb, but on the other hand, it was difficult to handle it.

Akshay playing the role of Transgender in Laxmmi Bomb

Akshay said that he tried not to hurt any sentiments of the people by his performance. In 30years of Akshay’s career, he never played such a mentally tough role.

No doubt, fans are waiting for Akshay in the role of Transgender because LGBTQ movies are turning the Bollywood into real cinema. By real cinema, we meant the characters to explore more by the actors and not limit to fighting and love angles.

First, there was Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, which was based on the lesbian girls. Then there was Shubha Mangal Zyada Saavdhaan, which focused on the relationship of a gay couple. And now there’s Laxmi Bomb, Bollywood’s first film featuring a transgender as the protagonist.

This is something to be cheerful about. But is Bollywood giving space to the LGBTQIA community to perform as an actor?

Till now, we have watched people from the community to be part of the movies but for a brief appearance or as a joke. We haven’t seen anyone playing LGBTQ before these movies. However, hardcore cinema has made movies like Aligarh and many more, loved by the critics, and made an impact on the audience’s hearts.

Still, somewhere in India, it is too early to expect this level of change and maturity from Filmmakers. Especially when actors and filmmakers don’t even feel northeast or south Indian as actors. We need to believe and get confidence in our skills.  The change will happen slowly and gradually with time. We can say that this is the start of the change.
