Born and brought up in an Army family in Lucknow, Gunjan Saxena had a dream to fly. But, considering the era when women didn’t even drive vehicles in India, we got another fierce woman who knocked her doors to determination.
Story of Kargil Girl
Gunjan Saxena at a very young age wanted to join the Indian Air Force (IAF), she walked towards her dream along with cheerful stands from her family. She graduated from Hansraj College in New Delhi and then went on to join the Delhi Flying Club at Safdarjung. Despite all the odds back when IAF wasn’t even accustomed to receiving applications from women pilots, she strived and became Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena.
Soon she was called upon to help the IAF for rescue operations during the Kargil War of 1999, which took place between India and Pakistan. She accompanied her colleague. Also, a fellow woman flight lieutenant, Srividya Rajan, both together became the first Indian woman to fly Cheetah helicopters in combat to help save injured soldiers.
They were required to fly very close to the Pakistan dominated territories around Srinagar to rescue the Indian soldiers. The mission was not only a huge success, but it also is known that Gunjan Saxena narrowly missed an attack by the enemy missile. Despite all the hurdles, she kept her aim at the goal of rescuing the Soldiers.
She was later honored with the Shaurya Chakra award for this brave act and was then recognized as the ‘Kargil Girl.’
