The trailer of Tappsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar’s much-talked-about film Saand Ki Aankh has just been released. The film is based on the life of Haryana-based sharpshooters, Chandro and Prakashi Tomar, played by Bhumi and Taapsee, respectively.
Chandro Tomar, nicknamed Shooter Dadi is an octogenarian sharpshooter from the village of Johri in the Bagpat district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. And Prakashi Tomar, nicknamed Revolver Dadi from Johri village of Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district is one of the oldest sharpshooters in the world. She is an iconoclast in the world of shooting.
Chandro Tomar was already in her 60’s when she started learning shooting. She has attained national fame as an accomplished shooter, having won more than 30 national championships. She is referred to as the oldest (woman) sharpshooter in the world.
Shooting runs in her family as noted from the fact that her niece Seema Tomar, also a sharpshooter, was the first Indian woman to win a medal at the Rifle and Pistol World Cup in 2010. Her granddaughter, Shefali Tomar, achieved international shooter status and has taken part in international competitions in Hungary and Germany; both of them credit Tomar for the positive encouragement provided and praised her for advising them.
The Pink actress reveals that forget shooting, she couldn’t even take aim before she started filming for the Tushar Hiranandani directorial film. Taapsee, who has played a spy in the actioners Baby and Naam Shabana, said at the trailer launch of the film, “I couldn’t even take aim to shoot. For this, I trained for three months, only then could I hold a pistol properly.” The Badla actress further stated that when she met Chandro for the first time, she wondered if she will ever manage to win as many awards as the shooter has at her age.
Saand Ki Aankh features two actresses in lead roles, which is a rare case in the Hindi film industry. On this, Taapsee said, “I don’t think only one person can make an entire film. There are a lot of people who are responsible to make a film, even if it is a single hero or a single heroine film. I think it is unfair to take away the credit from them. I feel this (a two-heroine film) is not very usual on-screen but I have a habit of doing things that are termed as unusual. Bhumi (Pednekar) and I both are in the film, script, and our roles individually.”
The trailer starts with Prakash Jha, in the role of Ratan Singh, saying, “Ye bandook mazak na hai. Ye mardo ka gehna hai aur mardo ke hath he achhi lage hai.”
Saand Ki Aankh is produced by Anurag Kashyap, Reliance Entertainment and Nidhi Parmar. The film is slated to release on October 25.
