As I read endless articles about mental health awareness and how to have sympathy and empathy for the ones battling a war with their minds every day, I ask myself about how far we\u2019ve come to eliminate the taboo besides just writing about it. I\u2019ve grown up in an environment where even the introverts or emotionally sensitive people are referred to as \u2018crazy\u2019! Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well being. Being mentally or emotionally healthy is much more than being free of depression, anxiety, or other psychological issues. Rather than the absence of mental illness, mental health refers to the presence of positive characteristics. An average human brain generates about 50,000 thoughts per day, and 70% of those thoughts are believed to be negative. So If you see it this way, there are very few people in the world that are mentally healthy since we are all holding this dark cloud of thoughts behind our backs every day. But as we all walk towards our path burdened with our thoughts, trying to fill the void that\u2019s inside all of us by continually setting up a goal and striving to achieve it; what we have in between the pressures of modern life is the lack of emotional support and empathy for each other. Judgment and discrimination are often the reasons why so many of us choose to suffer in silence. We want to focus on having a secure tomorrow! So it brings me back to my question. As we write about how we as a society have to work collectively to eliminate the stigma attached to mental health, are we all willing to take some time out of our solitary lives and lift each other from the dark hollow space? Or have we already drowned down upon the loneliness epidemic that\u2019s prevailing around the world!?
